White Balance is basically what type of light your camera translates into color.

To get started, just look at your camera manual, and find where the white balance menu is located.

Then all you need to do is adjust for the different lighting situations.

For Example, if you are outside, but it is cloudy, then you select the closest menu item to match, which on my camera, is listed as cloudy.

If you have a digital SLR then you will have multiple selections to choose from. Just experiment till you find what works best for what lights. You'll notice that full shade and cloudy are different. That is because there is a different color of light in full shade versus when the clouds diffuse sunlight.

Good luck, and enjoy!
